You can assign custom staff positions to your group members for events and leagues/tournaments on OpenSports. These roles help define responsibilities and improve clarity for both admins and participants.
What Are Staff Positions?
Staff positions are titles you assign to admins involved in running your league or tournament (e.g., Referee, Scorekeeper, Division Manager, Tournament Director). Staff positions can be created and assigned during league setup, in advance, or can be added and edited after your league is complete. Assigning staff positions helps:
Identify who is responsible for different aspects of the event
Allow players to message public-facing staff (if chat is enabled)
Improve coordination among admins
There are two types of staff positions:
Public Staff: Visible to players on the league or tournament page.
Private Staff: Only visible to other group and league-level admins. Useful for internal organization. (e.g. Assign a student coach as private staff so they’re recognized by your team but not publicly listed on the league page).
Who Can Be Assigned a Staff Position?
To assign a custom staff position, a group member must:
Be a member of your group
Be assigned the League Referee role or any admin role with greater permissions

Note: Staff members are not automatically notified when assigned a position, so you may want to inform them directly.
How to Set Up Staff Positions for Leagues or Tournaments
Set Up Staff Positions
From your Group Profile, go to the Dashboard.
In the left-hand menu, click Settings, then Staff Positions.
Click Create Staff Position, enter the title, and save.
You can also edit or delete existing staff positions here.
- These positions will be available for all future leagues and tournaments.
Option 1: Through Staff Assignments Dashboard
Once your league/tournament has been all set up. Located Group Profile > Dashboard, and select Staff Assignments
Locate league/tournament matches by selecting dates within calendar tabs
Select match or bulk assign staff positions by selecting multiple matches.
Select Start Assignment, and choose whether the position is Public or Private
Search for the group member’s name and select them.
Choose the staff position from the dropdown menu.
- Review information and click Save.
You can return and edit staff assignments at any time after the event is saved.
Option 2: Through the League/Tournament Dashboard
From the league/tournament dashboard, go to Matches.
Select Edit on the far right side.
- Select ADD STAFF in the popover window.
Choose whether the position is Public or Private and select Add Staff Assignment
Search for the group member’s name and select them.
Choose the staff position from the dropdown menu.
